Reasons why your hair is oily and greasy

According to Cynthia Cobb, DNP, APRN, a nurse practitioner specializing in women’s health, healthy hairs normally produce sebum, used to protect the hair and hydrate the scalp.

The hair type, hygiene habits and some lifestyle factors are the things that trigger the amount of oil your hair produces.

Over greasy hairs can attract dust particles and cause dandruff development.

Here are the causes of the oily hair;

1. Medication

Certain drugs may affect the hormones responsible for producing sebum. Such drugs interfere with hormonal levels and attribute to high production of sebum on the scalp, a substance that causes oily hair.

The common medication that has been associated with this condition is birth control pills.

2. Hereditary problems

In some cases, it might be an innate problem associated with family history. If one of your parents had oily hairs, you are likely to have them. Genes are usually passed down from a parent to a child.

3. Skin conditions

There are certain skin conditions behind the oily hair. The common conditions linked to it include psoriasis, eczema and seborrhea dermatitis. These conditions are believed to contribute to higher production of sebum on the scalp which in turn cause oily hairs.

4. Brushing your hair too much

This one has also repercussions. Brushing your hair too much redistributes the oil on your entire scalp.
